Two Pacifics Take Home Defensive Player of the Year

Zack Pace and Daniel Gonzalez Honored for Their Defensive Play

San Rafael, CA

The Pacific Association today honored Pacifics centerfielder Zack Pace and shortstop Daniel Gonzalez with Defensive Player of the Year awards for their respective positions.

Pace, following up on winning the award for outstanding play in centerfield in 2014, recorded a league-best 146 putouts while making only two errors. The Newark, Calif. native and Sonoma State University graduate batted .271, and reached base at a .407 clip.

Gonzalez was the unanimous selection at shortstop. In his third season with the Pacifics, Gonzalez recorded 98 putouts and 239 assists while boasting a fielding percentage of .968 – best among league short stops with more than 50 games played.  The 26-year-old Albuquerque, New Mexico product hit .301 with a career best 100 hits (3rd best in the league), 34 runs batted in, 58 runs scored, and seven stolen bases.

“The overall defense in the Pacific Association in 2015 was better than we’ve ever seen,” said Pacifics President and General Manager Mike Shapiro. “The Pacifics were built around solid defense up the middle and these awards to Zack and Daniel underscore how championships are won.  I couldn’t be happier that they were recognized by the league for their stellar play.”

The rest of the Defensive Player of the Year awards were given to Sonoma players, including pitcher Sean Conroy, catcher Isaac Wenrich, first baseman Daniel Baptista, second baseman Yuki Yasuda, and third baseman T.J. Gavlik. Stompers outfielders Mark Hurley and Matt Hibbert were also honored for their defensive talents.
